Mahal Gala (aka Mahil Gaila) is a village in Punjab, India. Follow Arjit Mahal as he travels back in time to 1952 when his father, Sardar Piara Singh Mahal, shot the daily life of his home village with an 8mm camera. The lifestyle of the village today has changed due to modernization; therefore, Piara Singh’s footage is a unique archive of the old way of life for the people of Mahal Gala and thousands of other Punjabi villages. Arjit Mahal and filmmaker Morgan Sanguedolce have preserved this important history in a short film for future generations to learn from and enjoy. The title is a shortening of the common philosophical phrase / practice of partitioning the space of possibilities. Through appearing between and disappearing behind columns, I sought to display the various possible ways to work with the space while also using the information provided by the sound score, which I chose because it reflected the mood I felt from the structure and the area surrounding it.
